MURDER AND MAYHAM: On July 4, 1877 a young man was killed at Carman by a pistol shot and Jesse Asher, a young man living in the country nearby was arrested for the murder.
In March 1878 at a warmly contested trial, the defendant was convicted of murder in the second degree and sentenced to ten years in the Joliet penitentiary, but was afterward pardoned by the Governor.
